SayPro Cultural Storytelling: Video Submission Competition

Overview:

As part of the Cultural Cooking Video Competition, participants are invited to submit a Cultural Storytelling narrative alongside their video submission. This is an opportunity to share not only the process of preparing a dish but also the personal and cultural stories that make the dish meaningful. Whether it’s a cherished family tradition, a regional variation, or a special memory tied to the dish, the narrative will provide a deeper understanding of why the dish holds significance.

Submission Guidelines:

  1. Eligibility:
    • Open to all SayPro participants submitting a video for the Cultural Cooking Video Competition.
    • Each participant must submit a brief written story that explains the cultural background and personal connection to the dish they feature in the video.
  2. Story Requirements:
    • Length: The story should be approximately 300 words.
    • Content: The narrative should address the following:
      • Family Traditions: Share any family customs or rituals associated with the dish. Does your family cook it on special occasions, such as holidays or celebrations? Is it passed down through generations? What does it mean to you and your family?
      • Regional Variations: If the dish has different versions or interpretations based on your region or culture, explain these variations. Does your version of the dish differ from others in preparation, ingredients, or presentation? How does it reflect your regional identity?
      • Special Memories: Reflect on any meaningful memories associated with cooking or eating this dish. This could be a moment spent cooking with loved ones, a family gathering, or a time when the dish brought comfort or joy.
      • Personal Connection: Explain why this dish is important to you personally. How does it connect you to your heritage, culture, or family? What emotions or thoughts does it evoke when you prepare or share it?
  3. Tone and Style:
    • The story should be heartfelt and authentic, capturing the personal and cultural significance of the dish. Write in a conversational, engaging tone, and ensure the narrative is clear, reflective, and emotionally resonant.
  4. Submission Process:
    • The Cultural Storytelling narrative should be submitted alongside the video through the SayPro website by the event deadline.
    • Both the video and the narrative must be properly titled with your name and the name of the dish.
  5. Judging Criteria:
    • Cultural Depth: Does the story effectively communicate the cultural importance of the dish, including family traditions, regional variations, or other cultural elements?
    • Personal Connection: How well does the narrative convey the participant’s personal relationship with the dish? Are the emotions and memories clearly expressed?
    • Engagement: Is the story engaging and easy to follow? Does it captivate the reader by sharing authentic and meaningful experiences?
    • Clarity and Structure: Is the narrative well-organized, with a clear flow and a focus on the 300-word limit?
  6. Prizes:
    • Winners will receive prizes based on the creativity, cultural depth, and personal connection in both the video and the storytelling narrative.
